The Estate

An exceptional
family estate

In the heart of Périgord Noir, Château de la Malartrie overlooks La Roque-Gageac, one of the most beautiful villages in France. Nestled at the foot of high limestone cliffs in a bend of the Dordogne, facing due south, it enjoys an exceptional panorama and an almost Mediterranean climate. Its gardens of over 2 hectares — belvedere, rose garden, century-old trees — and a natural beach 200 metres away complete this extraordinary setting.

History of the estate

The La Malartrie estate traces its origins to the 12th century — originally a hospice for lepers, nestled between cliff and river. In the late 19th century, the Count de Saint-Aulaire, French Ambassador to England, commissioned the current château in the Renaissance style it still wears today.

A family estate ever since, entirely renovated to blend modern comfort with historic authenticity, it carries forward, more than a century on, a deep love for this land and this house.

Testimonials

"
★★★★★

"I have to say that this place was beyond expectations. The pictures don't do it justice. We spent a week here with friends and it is by far my favourite vacation ever. The owner gave us a personal walk-through and there was an onsite property manager. The town is adorable and there is so much to do."

"
★★★★★

"We found this house to be perfect as my wife and I introduced our adult children and spouses to the Dordogne. Alix was there when we arrived and provided a tour of this fascinating chateau — none of the others we've visited contained furnishings and books from generations of the same family. Alix was proactive in contacting us to see if we needed anything."

"
★★★★★

"Chateau Malartrie is a truly unique property — an authentic historical family home of minor nobility in one of the most iconic French villages. Do expect a breathtaking location, lovely historical decor — oil paintings, tapestries, period furniture, family photos. As a Périgord touring base it cannot be matched. Within 30 minutes there are perhaps 50 notable places to visit."

"
★★★★★

"A stunning chateau in the most incredible location! Two weeks with family and friends — everyone had a truly wonderful time. Communication with owners Alix and Pierre-Augustin was brilliant. The housekeeper Juliane is super helpful — she even brought us fresh vegetables from the garden! The pool is huge, the terrace perfect for watching hot air balloons drift past. Simply brilliant."

"
★★★★★

"To say this beautiful castle is spectacular is an understatement!! Our hosts went to great lengths to make our stay the most memorable travel experience ever. We cooked dinner in the well-appointed kitchen and enjoyed it on the terrace watching hot air balloons rise over the river. The caretaker Juliana is FANTASTIC and cooked us the most exquisite French meal!"

"
★★★★★

"Wow, it is hard to describe how special it is to stay at La Malartrie! You are right on the river in a pristine 12th-century chateau. We canoed down the Dordogne, enjoyed a hot air balloon ride, visited 17,000-year-old cave paintings and took a 45 km e-bike tour. It was AMAZING! Thank you to the owners and staff for an unforgettable stay!"

« We had an unforgettable stay at this magnificent château — completely at home for a full week. The caretaker went above and beyond, preparing an exceptional dinner that made the experience even more special. Kayaking, exploring nearby châteaux… a truly unique experience that left us with lasting memories. »

"

« An absolutely AMAZING week celebrating our friend's birthday. The hosts and caretaker were incredibly kind and attentive. The kitchen was perfectly equipped for a large group, the pool simply perfect and the views breathtaking. One of the best weeks of my life — I would return without hesitation! »

"

« A magical week as a family — 16 of us including 8 children, all enchanted. Spectacular valley views, spacious rooms, excellent facilities for kids. Our hosts were wonderfully attentive throughout our stay. A truly exceptional place for an unforgettable holiday. »

"
★★★★★

« Magnificent property in a magical part of France. This was our second stay there with 14 friends — we were all in awe. We still talk about the hot-air balloons drifting up the valley from the terrace and the boats floating down the river. »
